Prague (pps) Just before the swimming world focuses on the 13th FINA World Swimming Championships in Rome (July 17th to August 2nd), Europe’s juniors will determine their 2009 Continental titles in Prague (CZE) from July 8th to 12th. Some of the athletes taking part at the 36th European Junior Swimming Championships, hosted for the first time by the Czech Swimming Federation in the “Golden City”, will certainly compete in Rome as well.

The 2008 title holders in six of the 32 individual events (with six additional relays) will compete again in the “Podoli” Swimming Pool Complex in Prague. A total of 14 medal winners from last year’s edition have been entered. The eligible age groups for Prague are 1991-92 (male) and 1993-94 (female).

Great Britain’s Anne Bochmann will strive to retain two titles, the 400m freestyle and the 400m individual medley. Other 2008 Champions entered are Hungary’s Eva Dobar (50m backstroke), Italy’s Silvia di Pietro (100m butterfly), Poland’s Mirela Olczak (200m butterfly) and the only male athlete among them, Great Britain’s Roberto Pavoni (400m individual medley). All six 2008 relay Champions will also participate.

Sweden’s Sarah Sjoestroem has already won the 100m butterfly title at the European Swimming Championships in Eindhoven last year. She will now compete in the 100m backstroke in Prague. Russia’s Danila Izotov can even boast an Olympic silver medal in the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay in Beijing.

Luxembourg has entered a famous name. Sarah Rolko will compete in the native country of her father Miloslav Rolko. The former Czechoslovakian Miloslav Rolko was the 1977 European Champion in the 100m backstroke in Jonkoeping, Sweden.

Last year’s top three nations were Great Britain with ten gold, five silver and three bronze medals, followed by Russia (6-7-11) and Italy (4-8-3).
